Close friends since the mid 1960's, Burton Greene (b.1937) and Perry Robinson (b.1938) are two of the most infamous and legendary pioneers of free jazz and the downtown scene. Performing together in a wide variety of bands and ensembles for over four decades, their telepathic rapport should be in sharp focus for this intimate duo performance. Expect works from their latest Tzadik recording, “Two Voices In the Desert”, including Freylekhs (based on ancient Jewish scales and roots) and at least one piece by composer John Zorn.
Robinson's first record, "Funk Dumpling", was recorded in 1962 and featured Kenny Barron, Henry Grimes and Paul Motian. He's appeared on Archie Shepp's "Mama Too Tight", Charlie Haden's "Liberation Music Orchestra", and Carla Bley's "Escalator over the Hill", and has performed and recorded with Dave Brubeck, William Parker and Rashied Ali. Greene rose to popularity during the 1960s while performing with Marion Brown, Albert Ayler, Gato Barbieri, Sam Rivers, Patty Waters and others. With Alan Silva he formed the Free Form Improvisation Ensemble in 1963, and joined Bill Dixon's and Cecil Taylor's Jazz Composers Guild in 1964. During the late 1980s he began exploring the Klezmer tradition in his groups Klezmokum (along with Perry Robinson), Klez-thetics, and a more recent group called Klez-Edge with vocalist Marek Balata.
Ars Nova Workshop is a Philadelphia nonprofit jazz and experimental music presenting organization. As a facilitator between artists and their audiences, Ars Nova Workshop works to inform, inspire and challenge listeners in order to elevate the role of jazz, improvisation and experimental music in contemporary culture.
